Fairphone 3 received 10/10 from iFixit: the smartphone is completely disassembled with a Phillips screwdriver – and is going back

Smartphone Fairphone 3    The Dutch company Fairphone (“Honest Phone”) believes that smartphones can and should be completely repairable. The second version of this device was released in 2015. Since the device is modular, it is possible to replace broken parts and buy batteries. Fairphone does not often need to release new versions, as ordinary manufacturers do, which are laid in the planned obsolescence.    The third version of the device was prepared only four years later. The prototype Fairphone 3 fell into the hands of electronics repair specialists from iFixit – and they gave it a maximum rating of 10 out of 10, see the photo report of the dismantling.    Fairphone 3 Specifications    5.65 “display, 2160 × 1080 resolution, 24-bit color depth, 18: 9 aspect ratio, Gorilla Glass 5  Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chip system: eight CPU cores, 1.8 GHz, Adreno 506 GPU (650 MHz)  4 GB RAM  64 GB internal memory, microSD expansion slot  Cameras 12 and 8 megapixels. The main camera has an LED flash. Movie 4k @ 30fps, 1080p @ 60fps, 720p @ 60fps  Wireless: Wi-Fi 802.11ac, BlueTooth 5 + LE, NFC, support for various GNSS standards (GPS)  Two nano-SIM cards, support 2G, 3G and 4G LTE (only GSM, no CDMA)  USB Type-C connector, various sensors: fingerprint scanner, background lighting, accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, barometer and compass  3.5mm audio jack  11.8 Wh battery   If you compare Fairphone 3 with other popular phones, you can look at the capabilities of the Snapdragon 632 SoC. Now it is an average budget chipset. In tests, the performance of the CPU and GPU is about 25-33% higher than that of the Exynos 7884B, which is installed in the Samsung Galaxy A10e (one of the current budget phones that are handed out for free, for example, to new subscribers in the USA).    The results of the Snapdragon 632 in tests are twice lower than that of the Snapdragon 845, which is installed in the flagship Google Pixel 3.    The 11.8 Wh battery is quite comparable with Google Pixel 3 (11.6 Wh) and iPhone XS Max (12.1 Wh). And if we take into account the less efficient processor, then we can assume that the Fairphone 3 will last longer on a single charge.    However, the final conclusions can be made only after the Fairphone 3 appears on sale (for now only pre-orders are accepted at the end of October). Actual performance and battery life may be highly dependent on OS and application optimization.    The phone is a little less than 10 mm thick and weighs 189 grams. It feels like a thick but not heavy phone. For comparison, the iPhone 10 was 7.7 mm thick and weighed 174 g, the iPhone 11 was 8.3 mm thick and the weight was 194 g. Google Pixel 3 was 7.9 mm thick and only 148 g.       Fairphone 3    Gorilla Glass 5 is the same glass that Samsung used in the Galaxy S8 and S9 series, although it switched to Gorilla Glass 6 with the Galaxy S10 +. Google also used Gorilla Glass 5 in its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL, although not in the cheaper Pixel 3A.     Disassembly IFixit engineers completely dismantled the device without using any additional tools besides the usual Phillips screwdriver and spudger.                          More photos                                                   For comparison, disassembling the iPhone X requires special screwdrivers and other tools for a total cost of about $ 88.       Accessories needed to disassemble iPhone X. Simple tools are also enough for this: only the T5 Torx slot and the plastic “opening pick”. Nothing is glued here. Of the minuses, the headphone jack, flash LEDs, and proximity and ambient light sensors are soldered to the board, and the USB-C port and microphone are soldered to the bottom module.    IFixit experts note that after parsing the device into components and all the modules into parts, they were able to perform the reverse procedure – and get a working phone in the original version. They say that far from all modern smartphones have managed to do this.    As a result, Fairphone 3 deservedly received 10 out of 10 maintainability points.           Europeans can pre-order Fairphone 3 now for € 450.00 plus shipping (for example, for the UK, DHL shipping costs € 10.20-13.20). For comparison, this is a little more expensive than the Pixel 2. But the buyer is guaranteed that if he breaks something – for example, a screen or a camera – he can buy this part and replace it on his own. Naturally, putting a new battery instead of the old one that is degraded does not pose a problem either.    The phone is slightly incompatible in ranges with American networks (Fairphone 3 has the following LTE bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 20, 26, and 3G: 800, 850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz), but there it will also work in the basic version (LT may not work in some areas
