Tumblr is on sale again, but porn will remain banned

Verizon, an American mobile operator, agreed to sell the Tumblr blog service to Automattic Inc, which owns the WordPress site management system. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but, according to Axios news service, citing its own sources, Tumblr sold “much less” $ 20 million.   As Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg said, the sale of Tumblr will be a “complement” to WordPress.   “Tumblr is one of the most iconic brands on the Internet,” said Matt Mullenweg. – This is an important place for the exchange of new ideas, culture and experience, which helps millions to create communities based on their common interests. We are pleased to add it to our lineup, which already includes WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads and more. ”   It is still unknown when the transaction will be completed. A Verizon statement said the deal is “subject to normal closing conditions.”   The fact that Verizon is looking for a buyer for Tumblr, it became known in May. Then the service became interested in Pornhub. One of the largest porn sites intended to return adult content to Tumblr, which Verizon banned in 2018. After the ban was introduced, by the way, Tumblr traffic fell by 30% in two months. The new owners are not going to remove the ban on porn.   The Tumblr blogging service was launched in 2007. In 2013, it was acquired by Yahoo for $ 1.1 billion. Verizon, in turn, bought Yahoo’s operating business, including Tumblr, for $ 4.48 billion in June 2017.   Verizon’s business in the media business didn’t go well: Verizon soon laid off 7% of its 11,000 employees in its media division, which includes Yahoo and AOL. This happened a few weeks after Verizon told the US Securities and Exchange Commission that its media business had “lower than expected revenues” and “lower benefits than expected from the integration of Yahoo and AOL.”
